Local roundup: Monache, PHS boys soccer win, keep chasing crown

The Monache and Porterville High boys soccer teams seemed to be heading on a crash course for another showdown for the East Yosemite League title.
Both teams picked up big EYL wins on Wednesday, with Monache winning at Mission Oak 1-0 and PHS winning at Tulare Union 3-1. Monache maintained its one-point lead (8-1-1, 25 points) over PHS (8-2, 24 points) in the race for the league title.
Hector Robles scored for Monache and goalie Marco Vieyra had an outstanding game in posting the shutout for the Marauders. “We played an awesome game,” Monache coach Manuel Castaneda said. “It was an unbelievable game. We came out with a lot of character.”

Cesar Castelo beat two defenders and was dragged down by one of the defenders to draw a penalty kick in the goal box and he converted the penalty kick for Porterville. Cesar Hernandez also scored on a free kick from just outside the goal box for PHS and Ariel Rosso scored on a pass from Hernandez to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead. “It was a really nice goal,” said Porterville coach Angel Vallin about Rosso’s goal.
Union scored a late goal for the final margin. “We pretty much dominated the whole game,” Vallin said.
Vallin also praised the play of goalie Lanron Asencio and defender Orlando Mendez. “Orlando Mendez on defense was awesome,” Vallin said.

The Grizzlies had many chances in overtime, but Cesar Chavez ended up scoring the winning goal with about three minutes left in the second 10-minute overtime. After Granite fell behind 1-0 in the first five minues, Jorge Nunez scored for Granite to force a 1-1 halftime time.
Chavez scored in the first five minutes of the second half to take a 2-1 lead before Francisco Ceballos scored to tie the game 2-2 for the Grizzlies. After Chavez went up 3-2, Nunez scored again to tie the score 3-3.
GRANITE GIRLS 9, CHAVEZ 0
The Granite Hills girls soccer team climbed back to the .500 mark in the East Yosemite League by rolling to a 9-0 win over Cesar Chavez on Wednesday.
Mercedes Steidley led Granite (5-5 in the EYL) with five goals. Gabby Ayala scored all three of her goals in the first half as the Grizzlies built a 5-0 halftime lead. Debra Rodriguez scored Granite’s other goal. Granite goalie Caylin Chasser posted the shutout.
MISSION OAK 3, MONACHE GIRLS 1
It was another frustrating loss for Monache (4-6 in the EYL) against one of the EYL’s upper echelon teams at MHS. “It was pretty much an even game,” Monache coach Peter Schalembier said, “They were able to finish. We were not able to finish. No excuses.”
Schalembier said he still has confidence in his team as it’s potentially the best team he’s had in the four years he’s coached at Monache. “I think we have a very good team,” Schalembier said. “We’re just a little bit short.”
Monache had its chances, but couldn’t take advantage. Down 1-0, the Marauders almost tied the score when Yvette Lopez crossed a pass that deflected off of a Mission Oak defender right to Elisabeth Gomez right in front of the goal. But the shot by Gomez bounced off the top of the crossbar.
After Mission Oak went on to take a 2-0 lead, Monache finally broke through with two minutes left in the half on an outstanding pass forward from Danica Taylor. Gomez beat Mission Oak’s goalie to the ball and scored to bring Monache to within 2-1 at halftime.
Monache’s best chance to tie the score again came when Naomi Hernandez perfectly placed her free kick to Gomez, but the Mission Oak goalie made a diving save on the shot by Gomez. Mission Oak added an insurance goal with about seven minutes left.
TULARE UNION 4, PORTERVILLE GIRLS 1
Briefly it looked like PHS (6-4 in the EYL) had the EYL frontrunner on the ropes after it closed to within 2-1. But Union scored two quick goals shortly after Porterville closed to within 2-1 to regain control.
Even though Union controlled much of the first half, the game was scoreless for 30 minutes before the Redskins scored twice in the last 10 minutes to take a 2-0 halftime lead. PHS Rochelle Lupio made two diving saves early in the second half to keep PHS within two goals.
Sabreena Vallin then almost scored on a free kick for PHS before Union failed to clear a ball and Elicia Alvarez was there to score to pull Porterville to within 2-1.
“We got pushed around,” said Porterville coach Carlos Bravo about the first half. “They did pretty much what they wanted in the first half.”
Bravo said he was pleased with his team’s effort in the second half. “Once we got it to 2-1, we had them on their heels a little bit,” he said.
Porterville was hurt by the absence of defender Monica Zavala, who was out with a hamstring injury. Bravo said he hopes Zavala can return for Friday’s game against Mission Oak. “She’s the anchor of our defense,” Bravo said. “We played well (defensively) not having her back there.”
STRATHMORE GIRLS 5, LINDSAY 1
Strathmore (16-2-1, 4-0 in the East Sequoia League) won the showdown for ESL supremacy on Tuesday at Lindsay as both teams came into the game unbeaten in the ESL.
“All in all, it was a good game, well-played by both teams,” Strathmore coach Hector Gonzalez said.
Nayeli Colunga scored twice and Alejandra Orozco, Andrea Gutierrez and Celeste Navarrete all scored once for SHS. Gonzalez praised the play of Kayla Holloway, Colunga, Hailey Tsuboi and Orozco at midfield. “They just moved the ball exceptionally well,” Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez also praised his defense led by Brittani Ortega, who has been marking the opponents’ top or fastest offensive player all season and was able to shut down Lindsay’s top offensive threat. “Brittani Ortega had an excellent game,” Gonzalez said.
In addition, Gonzalez praised the play of goalie Sasha Garcia.
