Monache boys defeat Tulare Western

 

Elijah Olais and the Monache boys basketball team wasn’t going to let this one slip away.
Monache held on for an impressive 71-63 win over Tulare Western on Friday at MHS. Olais scored 16 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter as Monache (5-4 in the East Yosemite League) outscored Western 25-20 in the fourth quarter. Monache led 37-27 at halftime before Western closed to within 46-43 after three quarters.
“A great win for us,” Monache coach Gary Miller said. “The team played really well. The subs came in and did their part. It was a whole team effort.” Also for Monache, Daniel Hernandez scored 12 points, Mark Pascual had 10 points and Casey Chavez added nine points.
PHS BOYS 68, KENNEDY 45
Porterville (7-6, 5-4) led throughout in winning its fourth in its last five games, which included Tuesday’s win over Monache.
“We didn’t play the greatest,” Porterville coach Lance Wallace said. “It was a nice game to play after the game Tuesday night.”
Courtland Duckworth scored 11 points, Anthony Flores had nine points and Porf Bueno and Anthony Flores each added eight points for PHS.
MONACHE GIRLS 66, WESTERN 52
Monache (9-0 in the EYL) overcame an 18-10 deficit after the first quarter at Western. Monache trailed 30-29 at halftime and led 49-39 after three quarters.
Jenae Alcantar scored 20 points, Dominique Pilkinton had 15 points, Ale Tobie had 12 points and Celina Montgomery added six points for the Marauders.
PHS GIRLS 55, KENNEDY 24
Porterville outscored Kennedy 34-10 in the second half on its way to the win at Sharman Gym. Alia Alvarez scored 13 points, Savannah Ertl had 12 points, Stephanie Price had eight points and Ashlei Esparza added seven points for PHS.
DELANO 48, GRANITE BOYS 43
Granite Hills led 37-36 after three quarters, but Delano outscored the Grizzlies 12-6 in the fourth quarter. In the end, Delano took advantage of its edge on the boards.
“We played three really good quarters,” Granite Hills coach Bud Luther said. “They really beat us on the ‘O’ boards pretty bad.”
David Pena scored 13 points, Dante Cunningham had 11 points, Josh Lewis had eight points and Blas Roman added six points for Granite.
LINDSAY 63, OROSI 7
Christina Castro had 21 points, five assists and five steals, Destiny Garcia had nine points, three assists and five steals, Megan Salinas had seven points and five steals, Renee Alvarado and Alexis Gutierrez each scored six points, Ashley Baker had five points, Rosie Esparza had four points and Alexsis Arguelles added three points for Lindsay.
MONACHE JV GIRLS 50, WESTERN 19
Danielle Emerson scored 13 points, Tarah Patterson had 12 points and Alyssa Cabeje added nine points to lead Monache’s junior varsity.
MONACHE FROSH 46, WESTERN 12
Electa Wright and Karina Garcia each scored eight points and Daisha Davis added six points to lead Monache’s freshmen (13-0, 9-0).
PHS FROSH GIRLS 35, KENNEDY 24
Maddy Covert scored 10 points, Sierra Paiste had nine points, Cassy Norris had seven points, Kayleigh had four points and Jasmin Lemus added two points for Porterville’s freshmen (6-3 in the EYL). PHS also won the junior varsity game 48-3.
WRESTLING
MONACHE SPLITS
Monache beat Robert F. Kennedy 40-21, but lost to Mission Oak 40-33 in Tulare on Thursday. Monache (5-1 in the East Yosemite League) had only 12 out of 14 wrestlers, so gave away two matches against Mission Oak. The Marauders actually outscored Mission Oak 33-28 in matches that were wrestled.
“We had some losses that could have changed the match where we were in position to win against Mission Oak,” Monache coach Arthur Demerath said.
Two close losses that helped make the difference against Mission Oak for Monache came when Josh Sabayan (126 pounds) lost 4-2 and Brian Leypon (145) lost 4-1. Sabayan did win his match in overtime against Kennedy.
Matt Gamble (106) continued to look strong for Monache, winning both of his matches by pin. Seth Hood (113) won by pin and by forfeit for Monache. Fredi Tapia (132) also had an impressive night for Monache, winning by technical fall 11-2 and by pin. Joey Ryan (138) won by pin against Mission Oak and lost 6-1 to the Kennedy wrestler, who’s ranked No. 6 in the Valley, for the Marauders.
Monache’s Justin Fournier (152) won by pin and lost to Mission Oak’s Jason Medley, ranked No. 6 in the Valley, 11-3. Daniel Cruz (160) also won by pin against Mission Oak for Monache.
