Local roundup: Spartan boys soccer falls to Orosi

When it comes to challenging the East Sequoia League’s top squads, the Strathmore High boys soccer team still has a long way to go.
After falling to Woodlake 5-1 on Tuesday in its ESL opener, Strathmore fell to another ESL power in Orosi, 7-2, on Thursday at Spartan Stadium. Woodlake is the defending Division V Valley champion while Orosi is the defending co-ESL champion with Woodlake. Orosi (1-0-1 in the ESL) was coming off a 2-2 tie against Lindsay, another team expecting to challenge Orosi and Woodlake for ESL supremacy.
Much like Tuesday’s game against Woodlake, Strathmore found itself having to overcome an early three-goal deficit. Woodlake took a 3-0 lead in the first 15 minutes against SHS and it took 20 minutes for Orosi to go up 3-0 against the Spartans.
Down 2-0, Strathmore had a chance to close to within 2-1, but Jesse Romero sent a point blank shot over the crossbar after breaking free. Strathmore trailed 3-0 when Spartan goalie Luis Barezza made two diving saves to keep SHS within striking distance.
SHS closed to within 3-1 when Fernando Garcia scored his 20th goal of the season, breaking free after taking a pass that was sent forward by Daniel Negrette. Strathmore had a chance to close to within 3-2 when Johan Monzo crossed a pass to Romero, but Romero’s header was stopped by Orosi’s goalie. Orosi scored on a breakaway late in the first half to take a 4-1 halftime lead.
Strathmore pulled to within 5-2 after the Orosi goalie made a diving save on a shot by Garcia. But the Orosi goalie couldn’t control the ball and Noe Lopez scored on the rebound to make it 5-2.
BASKETBALL
