When Mikey Hidalgo got going, there was no stopping the Porterville College men’s basketball team. Hidalgo scored 33 of his 39 points in the second half as PC came back for an 81-76 win over Merritt College on Friday at the Bakersfield College Tournament.
The Pirates (2-4) advanced to today’s 5 p.m. championship game. Against Merritt, PC trailed by 12 points with 10 minutes left in the game. “That’s when Mikey Hidalgo went off,” PC coach T.J. Jennings said. “That’s where shooting-wise, he was lights out. As a coach you just sit there and watch. There wasn’t a play I could call.”
Hidalgo continued his hot streak over the last four games in which he’s averaged 29.5 points a game. Also for PC against Merritt, Kameron Hoyt scored 14 points and Jason Carmichael added 12 points.
“It was a slow start,” Jennings said. “We didn’t necessarily play very well to begin the game. It wasn’t a beautiful win.”
But Jennings also said, “We’re a feisty team. I was pleased with our performance.”
