Skyler Schrein of Monache takes down his Western opponent on Wednesday.

Monache wrestling now 4-0 in the EYL

Even though it didn’t receive the chance to compete in that many matches, the Monache wrestling team still had an impressive effort against Tulare Western and Cesar Chavez on Wednesday at MHS.
Monache beat Western 54-16 and Chavez 67-9 to improve to 8-1 and 4-0 in the East Yosemite League as Western and Chavez had to forfeit many of their matches. “I was very happy with the performance,” Monache coach Arthur Demerath said. “I see more and more improvement every week.”
Seth Hood (120 pounds) and Joey Ryan (138) led Monache as Hood didn’t lose a point in winning both of his matches. Hood won by technical fall 15-0 and by majority decision 13-0. Ryan won both of his matches by pin.
Monache wrestlers who won their only match were Ryan Poe (1260, Ethan Skiles (145), Brian Leypon (152), Skyler Schrein (182) and Matt Gamble (113), who won by pin.
The Marauders will compete today and Saturday in one of the state’s toughest tournaments, Morro Bay’s California Invitational Tournament. Demerath said he’s hoping for his team’s second straight top five finish, coming off its fourth place finish at the Kern County Invitational last weekend.

TAFT 101, PC WOMEN 63
Porterville (0-3 in the Central Valley Conference) continued its tough CVC schedule in its loss at Taft. “They’re very athletic and they’re very big,” PC coach Dave Kavern said. “They really hurt us in transition and on the offensive boards.”
Eva Gutierrez scored 13 points, Maribel Bravo had 11 points, Regine Mecenario had nine points and Stephanie Dounseroux and Kee’Maya Snowden each added six points for PC.
CHAVEZ 43, PORTERVILLE 39
Cesar Chavez had a relatively easy win over PHS at the Redwood Invitational early in the season, but it was a much different story this time with PHS coming up just short on Tuesday. The turning point came late in the second half after Alia Alvarez hit a three to give Porterville a 25-15 lead. But Chavez went on an 8-0 run to close to within 25-23 at halftime.
Chavez led by as many as 10 points early in the fourth quarter. Savannah Ertl scored on a putback to pull PHS to within 41-39 before Chavez held on.
The difference of the game came at the foul line where Chavez was 20-of-37 and the Panthers were 12-of-24.
Alvarez and Ertl combined to score 35 of Porterville’s 39 points as Alvarez scored 18 points and Ertl added 17 points. But Chavez switched to a box-in-one on Alvarez in the second half and held Alvarez to five points in the third quarter and scoreless in the fourth quarter.
“A pretty good effort,” said Porterville coach Tom Fiormonti about his team’s play.
