Dieterle wins at EYL meet

Porterville High competed in the East Yosemite League diving championships Friday at Tulare Union.

Josh Dieterle dove his way to first place with 421.60 points. Teammate Jon Callahan captured second with a score of 321.60.

On the girls side, Amber Frisby finished fourth with 243 points while Lindsey Ames took fifth at 219.

“I’m really proud of my divers,” Panthers coach Tom Harrison said. “They worked hard, went out there and did their job.”

Porterville will participate in the Division 2 championships at 9 a.m. Tuesday in Bakersfield.

The Panthers took down the Titans on the road.

Kevin Hulse went 4-for-4 with a grand slam, three doubles and four RBIs for Porterville High (16-8, 7-3 EYL).

Joel Cowart was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two doubles, Phillip Carganilla went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and Daniel Rueger finished 2-for-5.

Thomas Martin was the winning pitcher, covering 4 2-3 innings with five strikeouts and two hits allowed.

Joe Tuttle pitched the final 2 1-3 frames and gave up just three hits.

The Panthers led 13-0 at one point in the game.

Strathmore 12, Farmersville 1
The Spartans clinched the East Sierra League crown with a rout of the Aztecs in five innings on the road.

Savannah Rascon was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a double while Mercedes Magallon was 2-for-3 with a stolen base.

Krystal Austin went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI, Angelica Sanchez finished 2-for-2 with one RBI and Olivia Arellano was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

Austin went the distance and collected seven strikeouts in a winning effort for Strathmore High (16-4, 8-0 ESL).

Tulare Western 8, Granite Hills 5
The Grizzlies dropped a nail-biter to the Mustangs on the road.

Granite Hills High (8-15, 3-7 EYL) took just nine players to compete against Tulare Western.

Natalie Garcia and Jennifer Landers both turned in great performances.

Mitchell Kurz hit two home runs and Jakob Rueger added a homer for Porterville High (13-8, 6-3 EYL).

Josh Sanders contributed a base hit and Vince Hernandez was the winning pitcher.
