Local roundup: PC volleyball beats Reedley

Porterville College women’s volleyball coach Dale Henderson didn’t like what he saw out of his team on Wednesday, so he sent his squad right back on the floor to practice as soon as the match was over.
The Pirates were able to beat Reedley 25-22, 26-24, 23-25, 25-18, but looked like it was looking ahead to its showdown with Fresno City College for Central Valley Conference supremacy in the process.
PC (10-5) did improve to 6-0 in the CVC, setting up its match for first place on Friday in Fresno. Porterville also maintained a two-game lead in the race for second in the CVC and a guaranteed spot into the state playoffs.
Amanda Monge had 17 kills, six blocks and 12 digs, Allison Clem had 16 kills, one block and seven digs, Tori Davis had eight kills, two blocks, five digs and three aces and Stephanie Dounseroux added eight kills, nine digs and 39 assists for PC.
PHS 3, MISSION OAK 0
Poterville (7-4 in the EYL) beat Mission Oak 25-14, 25-11, 25-17 at Sharman Gym. Starting setter Savannah Ertl received the chance to play at outside hitter and had 12 kills and four blocks, combining with Vanessa Gutierrez, who had 16 kills, two blocks and one dig. Rochelle Lupio and Megan Behrens set up the attack with Lupio picking up 16 assists and Behrens picking up 18 assists. Also for PHS, Becky Mueller had nine kills and 10 blocks, Sami Gutierrez had six aces and seven kills, Nicole Erickson had six kills and five blocks, Jenna Duran, Kady Parker, Amalia Andrade and Hannah Emerson all played well defensively, Mariah Wall had two kills and played well defensively and Michaela Zimmerman added four kills and five blocks.
MONACHE 3, CHAVEZ 2
Monache (6-5 in the EYL) came back to beat Cesar Chavez 14-25, 16-25, 25-20, 25-21, 15-12. Cassie Balatico had five aces, two kills and 38 assists, Chelsea Gutierrez had two aces, nine kills and seven digs, Nadya Kasimoff had two aces, eight kills and 18 digs, Danielle Emerson had three aces, four kills and eight digs and Jaley Bochat had five aces, three kills and two digs for Monache.
Monache JVs (15-1, 10-1) and Monache’s freshmen also won.
TULARE UNION 3, GRANITE HILLS 0
Granite almost took a game from EYL frontrunner Union before falling 13-25, 26-28, 14-25. Corina Felix had three kills and one block, Lupita Flores had one kill and 15 digs and Mariella Tapia added two kills and three digs for Granite.
PHS JVS 2, MISSION OAK 1
Porterville won the junior varsity match 17-25, 25-15, 15-6. Roni Long had 10 kills and six aces, Kenzy Flynn had two kills and one block and Cecilia Ledesma added one kill, four aces and nine assists for PHS.

MONACHE BOYS 16, TULARE WESTERN 11
Monache (10-4, 7-1 in the East Yosemite League) built a 12-5 halftime lead in keeping pace for the EYL title. “The boys played a well organized, clean game against a strong opponent,” Monache coach Brandon Weaver said.
None of Monache’s players were ejected. Monache goalie Jonathan Schalembier had an outstanding game with 13 saves. Also for Monache, Trevor Kroutil had four goals and three steals, Matt Lalanne had four goals, Caleb Parnell and Izaac Urias both had three goals and one steal, Geoffrey Camarena had one goal and two steals and Hans Schalembier scored once.
MONACHE GIRLS 24, TULARE WESTERN 3
Mary Crocker and Elizabeth Jacobs each scored five goals, Tawn Peer, Allegra Fritz and Bailey Likewise all had three goals, Shannon Kaye scored twice, Kathryn Ivoncovich and Faith Weaver each scored once and Dominique Pilkington scored her first goal of the season for Monache (7-1 in the EYL).
PHS GIRLS 15, STRATHMORE 6
Marnie Kavern and Sydney Knight each had three goals, Mikayla Scheer, Marlee Duncan, Kassidy Lane and Matlyn Morris all scored twice, Abby Peltzer scored once, Mady Snyder had five steals and in the goal, MaryRose McGinn had nine saves and Courtney Hall added five saves for Porterville (8-0 in the EYL), which won its 52nd straight league game.
GIRLS TENNIS
PORTERVILLE 5, GRANITE HILLS 3
Granite (11-9, 9-6 in the EYL) had a chance to pull off the upset, nearly going up 4-2 in singles before PHS (12-1 in the EYL) was able to split in singles and win both doubles matches to win the match shortened by darkness.
In singles for Granite, Lisa Yang won 6-2, 6-3, Kelsey Blackburn beat Porterville’s Jessica Gonzalez 6-3, 3-6, (10-8) and Brandy Ibarra won 6-2, 6-4. For PHS, Daryin Rodriguez won 6-0, 6-0, Kathy Camin won 6-1, 6-0 and Cecilia Felix beat Granite’s Sophia Martinez 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). In doubles for PHS, Quin Johnson and Rodriguez won 8-2 and Sara McCarthy and Calia Cook won 8-5.

QUILLING SHINES
Alexis Quilling shot an outstanding score of 98 on Tuesday in the league tournament at Delano Golf Course to lead Granite Hills to a second place finish. Quilling qualified for this Tuesday’s Area Tournament at Tulare Golf Course in the process.
CROSS COUNTRY
GRANITE BOYS BEAT UNION
Granite’s boys picked up what’s believed to be the school’s first ever win against Tulare Union 25-30. Granite also beat Robert F. Kennedy at its home course 23-36 to improve to 3-1 in the EYL. Oscar Campos was the overall winner, finishing the three-mile course in 18 minutes, 4 seconds.
Granite’s girls are also 3-1 in the EYL after losing to Union 19-44 and beating Kennedy 24-31. Granite’s Angelica Reyes was the overall winner, turning in a strong time of 22:26.
MONACHE
Monache’s boys got off to a 2-0 start at Cesar Chavez, beating Chavez 15-50 and Tulare Western 23-34. Monache went 1-2 as Jorge Ceballos won in 15:55 and Jesus Salas was second in 16:02. Monache’s girls split, beating Chavez 19-36 and losing to Western 20-37. Monache’s Kacie Williams was the overall winner in 20:07.
Monache’s frosh-soph girls swept, beating Chavez 15-50 and Western 26-29. Monache’s Lara Lopez was second in 14:52 (two miles). Monache’s frosh-soph boys also swept as Monaceh beat Chavez 15-45 and Western 24-31. Monache’s Kyler Tabor finished second in 11:56.
FOOTBALL
PHS FROSH 36, TULARE WESTERN 13
Cole Beals scored on a runs of 80, 40 and 5 yards, Devin Cunningham had a touchdown reception, Freddy Gonzalez had an 80-yard kickoff return for a score and Logan Coppenbarger scored on a 12 yard run for Porterville’s freshmen (3-1 in the EYL).
