Townsend headlines Lindsay's All-ESL crop
Lindsay center Seth Townsend earned MVP honors in the recently-announced All-East Sequoia League boys’ basketball awards.
The senior averaged 17.5 points and four rebounds per game to lead the Cardinals to a 20-10 record and into the Div. IV quarterfinals, where they were ousted by No. 1 Bakersfield Christian.
Townsend recently joined an elite club of Cardinals to surpass the 1,000-point scoring mark this year.
Townsend’s partner in crime all season, shooting guard Bryan Gonzalez, earned himself a spot on the ESL’s first team after leading the Cardinals in scoring with a 19.2 average.
Strathmore wing Jorge Ojeda was the only junior named to the first team for averaging better than 13 points per game for the Spartans.
Lindsay point guard Donovan Castro was the only Orange Belt player on the ESL’s second team. The junior handled the Cardinals’ ball-distributing duties with a team-best three assists per game.
Strathmore and Lindsay swept the entire third team with three Spartans — sophomores Eddie Cisneros and Alex Maciel, and junior Geostan Duffin — and two Cardinals — sophomores Adam Gamboa and Jordan Townsend.
ESL champs Corcoran placed three players — Joseph Turner, Devin Johnson and Emmanuel Madrid — on the first team and two players — Brant Botill and Steven Manibojoca — on the second team. The Panthers’ Andrew Burke was named Defensive Player of the Year.
Seth Townsend plans to attend Brigham Young University this fall while Gonzalez hopes to latch on with Porterville College’s hoops squad. But Lindsay expects to return the rest of their key players while all of their rival Corcoran’s stars graduate.
Gonzalez and Townsend have also solidified spots on the Recorder’s All-Orange Belt first team, to be named at a future date.
