Orozco nabs 2 titles

THE PORTERVILLE RECORDER

Former Monache wrestler Sam Orozco is still pinning and out-pointing grapplers despite his high school career ending.

The 125-pounder won two tournament titles — the California Junior Freestyle Championships in Lemoore and the Junior Greco Championships in Temecula.

Orozco, who graduated last week, defeated Chris Diaz, who was wrestling for the Sanger Warpath, in the finals.

At the Greco Championships, Orozco pinned Team Temecula’s Jake Damon in just less than two minutes to earn the second championship.

Also at these tournaments was Marauder state qualifier Gabe Ramirez.

Ramirez placed third at the Freestyle Championships, but was able to finish second at the Greco Tourney. He lost in two matches (7-1, 6-1) to Shohei Takagi of Wrestler Nation at 140 pounds.

Orozco will now represent California in team competition as the best in the aforementioned tournaments will team up and take on other states.

The first competition will be in Oklahoma on June 19 with the National state vs. state competition coming July 12, in Fargo, N.D.
