Panthers tower over Titans, aim for perfect season
Porterville’s boys’ tennis team continued steamrolling EYL competition with its latest victim — Cesar Chavez — falling 8-1 on Wednesday afternoon.
Recently-named No. 1 singles player Jeremy Eggman handled his opponent 6-3 in the first set, but needed a tie-breaker in the second to prevail, 7-5.
CJ Cobarruvias easily took out his foe, 6-0, 6-2, from the second singles spot.
Andrew Chung and Raul Mejia finished their counterparts in similar fashion — 6-1, 6-4 for Chung and 6-1, 6-3 for Mejia — for the third and fourth points.
No. 5 Roger Moreno slipped up in the Panthers’ only loss. Moreno easily took the first set 6-2, but lost the second 5-7 in a tiebreaker.
Moreno’s oppoenent continued the momentum through the super breaker and won 10-7 over Moreno.
Luis Suarez nearly swept his man from the No. 6 slot, 6-0, 6-1.
Eggman and Cobarruvias teamed up to destroy their doubles opponent 6-1, 6-0.
The No. 2 doubles team of Chung and Adrian Vidrio beat their counterparts 6-4, 6-2.
The third team of Charlie Carrillo and Felix Dicente handled the Titans’ third duo, 6-4, 6-0.
The Panthers improved to a perfect 10-0 in EYL this year.
Porterville next visits Granite Hills on Monday and attempt to remain undefeated with a season-finale clash against Monache next Wednesday.
The EYL championships will be held Saturday, May 9.
