Panthers crush Redskins; Grizzlies falter
One team continued its rampage through the EYL; the other hasn’t had much to smile about this year.
The Porterville boys’ tennis team (9-0 EYL) notched yet another shutout, 9-0, over Tulare Union while the Granite Hills squad (1-9 EYL) lost 6-3 to Delano.
Panthers No. 1 singles player Jeremy Eggman won 6-3, 6-2 with No. 2 CJ Cobarruvias being tested but winning 6-4. 6-2.
No. 3 Andrew Chung, who was out with a back injury recently, was also pushed to the limit in his first set, winning 7-6, but was able to cruise to a 6-2 second-set victory.
Raul Mejia and Roger Moreno, the Panthers’ No. 4 and 5 players, had similarly dominant wins — 6-0, 6-1 for Mejia and 6-1, 6-0 for Moreno.
No. 6 Luis Suarez took his match 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles, Eggman and Cobarruvias didn’t get much competition, winning 6-2, 6-1.
Charlie Carrillo and the newly healthy Adrian Vidrio won 6-2, 6-3 in second doubles and Team Felix, Dicente and Lupe, breezed to a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles.
Granite entertained Delano at home but lost four of its six singles matches and two of its three in doubles.
No. 1 singles player Johnny Yang lost 1-6, 0-6 but No. 2 David Tiernan evened up the Grizzlies with a 7-6 (7-0 tiebreaker) and 6-0 victory.
No. 3 Cesar Casalda won 7-5, 6-1 but Alex Fisher, Robert Madrigal and Cesar Cordero couldn’t top their Tiger counterparts.
In doubles, Yang and Tiernan got a win (6-4, 2-6, 10-3) while the third team of Fabian Martinez and Josh Sides lost the night’s longest match 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 (8-10).
