Local roundup: PC volleyball falls just short

Monache runners are strong

 

The Porterville College volleyball team came oh so close to knocking off Fresno City College in the battle for Central Valley Conference supremacy in Fresno.
Fresno came back to win its 57th straight conference match, edging PC 24-26, 24-26, 25-17, 25-13, 15-13 on Friday. Fresno is 7-0 in the CVC while Porterville (10-6) is 6-1.
Amanda Monge had 17 kills, eight blocks, eight digs and was 12-of-14 serving with one ace, Tori Davis had seven kills, two blocks, eight digs and was 13-of-15 serving, Allison Clem had seven kills and 10 digs, Stephanie Dounseroux had one kill, one block, 30 assists and 10 digs and Jennifer Landers was 22-of-23 serving with 12 digs for PC.

Monache had another outstanding effort at the Rough Rider Invitational at Woodward Park against runners from all over the state. Monache’s varsity boys finished fourth behind the state’s No. 1 team, Arcadia, Buchanan and Hollister. Monache’s frosh-girls took second while Monache’s frosh-soph boys took seventh and Monache’s junior varsity boys were eighth.
For Monache’s varsity boys, Jorge Ceballos had an outstanding time of 16 minutes, 25 seconds over the 3.1-mile course to take ninth while Jesus Salas was 12th in 16:31. Also for Monache, Gustavo Rivera finished in 17:22, Ismael Fernandez finished in 17:27 and Joel Mendez finished in 18:01.
For Monache’s varsity girls, Kacie Williams also had an outstanding time to finish 19th in 20:49. The top 25 finishers medaled. Other medalists for Monache were:
Frosh-soph boys: Kyler Tabor, ninth, 12:48 (2.2 miles); Israel Sotelo, 13th, 13:01. JV boys: Jacob Rankin, 14th, 12:30. Frosh-soph girls: Monique Orozco, sixth, 15:32; Ruby Garcia, 13th, 16:17; Laura Lopez, 14th, 16:17; Jackie Escareno, 15th, 16:20; Vickie Camacho, 20th, 16:54; Aracely Rodriguez, 25th, 17:41.
“It was really good competition and our kids did real well,” Monache coach Brian Cruess said.
