Grizzlies tennis shocks Titans
Granite Hills 7, Cesar Chavez 2
Thursday’s postponed game against Cesar Chavez turned into a boon for Granite Hills tennis, which earned yet another surprising upset over a tough Titans squad.
The Grizzlies won five of the six singles matches to follow up their surprising 5-4 victory Tulare Union earlier in the season.
No. 1 singles Johnny Yang dug deep to pull out a 6-7 (7-9), 6-2, 10-8 marathon win, as did No. 2 David Tiernan, 3-6, 6-3, 13-11.
Since returning from a short absence, No. 3 Robert Madrigal easily handled his counterpart, 6-1, 6-3.
No. 4 Ker Thao used a 7-1 tiebreaker to win the first set and cruised in the second set, 6-1 while Matt Ramirez barely dropped 3-6, 6-7 (5-7) the Grizzlies’ only singles loss.
In his first singles match, No. 6 Winston Thao handily won, 6-1, 6-1.
With the overall match already won, the No. 1 doubles team of Yang and Ker Thao gave up a second point to the Titans in a 6-8 loss.
Tiernan and Madrigal (8-1) and Victor Yanez and Martina Ayala (8-2) finished off the doubles portion for a resounding victory.
Granite (9-10, 3-6 EYL), which was without James Capps, next visits Delano.
