Local roundup: PC wins, Monache runners strong

The Porterville College women’s volleyball team won its Central Valley Conference opener at PC on Friday, sweeping Columbia 25-12, 25-15, 25-13.

Amanda Monge had 14 kills, two blocks, eight digs and was 11-of-12 serving with one ace, Allison Clem had five kills, 10 digs and was 10-of-11 serving with one ace, Stephanie Dounseroux had three kills, one block, 11 digs and 23 assists and Danielle Carrillo wsa 17-of-18 serving with three aces for PC (5-5).

MHS RUNNERS STRONG

Three Monache runners all finished the three-mile course at Mooney Grove under 16 minutes as the Monache boys cross country team finished fourth at the Mt. Whitney Invitational. Three Clovis schools finished ahead of Monache as Buchanan won, Clovis North took second and Clovis was third.

Jesus Salas finished ninth for Monache in 15 minutes, 14 seconds, Jorge Ceballos was 15th in 15:24 and Ismael Fernandez was 29th in 15:53. To show how fast the course was, Ceballos finished ninth last year in 16:08.

Salas set a blistering pace, leading after one mile as he ran the first mile in 4:40. Another varsity runner, Joel Mendez, competed in the sophomore race and was third in 16:24. “We had some amazing times,” Monache coach Brian Cruess said. “It’s a fast course. The hard work’s paying off.”

The top 25 runners in each division received medals. Also for Monache, Cesar Garcia was 44th in 16:32 and Gustavo Rivera was 36th in 16:28.

Monache’s varsity girls finished 14th, Monache’s freshmen boys finished third, Monache’s junior varsity boys finished second and Monache’s frosh-soph girls finished second. Other medalists for Monache were:

Varsity girls — Kacie Williams, 24th, 19:41; JV boys — Chris Alcantar, 16h, 18:41; Dexter Cadiz, 11th, 18:25; Cresencio Rodriguez, 22nd, 18:58; Joey Ryan, 23rd, 19:00; Brandon Tan, 15th, 18;34. Freshmen boys — Rene Lopez, 20th, 19:18; Israel Sotelo, 14th, 18:27; Kyler Tabor, 13th, 18:11. Frosh-soph girls (two miles) — Laura Lopez, 11th, 15:43; Monique Orozco, 13th, 15:44; Marlene Alcantar, 14th, 15:47.

GIRLS GOLF

LINDSAY 303, GRANITE HILLS 345

The heat caused the scores to rise somewhat, but Lindsay clinched the league title, improving to 6-0 in the process on Thursday at River Island.

Lindsay’s Jessica Hernandez and Granite’s Alexsis Quilling tied for low score medalist honors as both shot a 56. Also for Lindsay, Destiny Garcia fired a 59, Marissa Knutson shot a 61, Renee Alvarado fired a 62 and Isabel Murguia added a 65. Jereniss Alcantar and Brooke Quilling also had solid rounds for Granite as Alcantar shot a 59 and Quilling fired a 62.

Hernandez and Alvarado will compete today in the Monache Best Ball Tournament at River Island.
