Local roundup: Monache boys polo comes back for win
The Monache boys water polo team was able to pull out another huge East Yosemite League win, coming back to beat Tulare Union 9-8 on Wednesday.
Monache (4-1) in the EYL outscored Union 4-0 in the fourth quarter to overcome an 8-5 deficit. Matt Lalanne and Caleb Parnell each scored two goals in the fourth quarter, with Lalanne scoring the game-winner with 1 minute, 30 seconds left to give Monache a 9-8 lead.
Lalanne scored four goals, Parnell had three goals and Brandon Swearingen scored twice for Monache. On defense, Lalanne had five steals, Geoffery Camerena had four steals, Trevor Kroutil had three steals, Parnell had one steal and goalie Jonathan Schalembier posted six saves.
“It was a fabulous game,” Monache coach Brandon Weaver said. “It was a great team effort. We had a good comeback. I am proud of the boys.”
MONACHE GIRLS 19, TULARE UNION 10
Bailey Likewise scored seven goals, Mary Crocker scored five goals, Faith Weaver, Shannon Kaye and Elizabeth Jacobs all scored twice and Kathryn Ivoncovich scored once for Monache (10-1, 5-0 in the EYL).
PHS GIRLS 18, EXETER 3
Matlyn Morris had five goals, Marnie Kavern had four goals, Makayla Reed, Brooke Day and Kassidy Lane each scored twice and Aftin Whitten, Haley Newkirk and Mady Snyder all scored once for Porterville (11-1, 5-0 in the EYL. In the goal, Courtney Hall had four saves and MaryRose McGinn added two saves for Porterville.
MONACHE JV BOYS 26, TULARE UNION 2
Dylan Badders, Nick Porter, Austin Badders, Drew Berra, Mason Gamble, Cameron Covert, Joseph Sandoval and Aaron Zike all scored for Monache (6-0, 5-0 in the EYL).

PC 3, WEST HILLS 0
Porterville College (6-5, 2-0 in the Central Valley Conference) swept West Hills 25-14, 25-20, 25-13. Amanda Monge had nine kills, one block, nine digs and was 13-of-14 serving with two aces, Allison Clem had six kills, one block, three digs and was 8-of-8 serving, Tori Davis had five kills, three digs, one assist and was 7-of-7 serving, Danielle Carrillo had four kills and three digs and Stephanie Dounseroux had two kills, nine digs, 21 assists and was 7-of-7 serving for PC.
DELANO 3, PORTERVILLE 2
Delano edged PHS 22-25, 25-18, 15-25, 25-22, 15-13. For PHS, Savannah Ertl had six points, three kills, three blocks, one dig and 34 assists, Vanessa Gutierrez had three points, one ace, seven kills, one block and eight digs, Becky Mueller had 19 kills, eight blocks and two digs and Sami Gutierrez had five points, two aces, one assist, seven kills and six digs.
TULARE WESTERN 3, GRANITE HILLS 0
Granite fell 11-25, 20-25, 16-25. Debra Rodriguez had four aces and 13 assists, Corina Felix had two kills, two blocks and nine digs, Lupita Flores had five kills and eight digs, Mariella Tapia had two kills and Jodi Georgianna added three kills and seven digs for Granite.
PHS JVS 2, DELANO 0
Porterville won the junior varsity match 25-17, 25-22. Cecilia Ledesma had one ace, two blocks, one kill, 15 assists and served for five points, MacKenzy Flynn had one ace, one kill and served for four points, Mikayla Ignacio had three kills, Tiffany Carrillo and Danielle Jimenez each had one kill, Taylor Mueller and Madison Avila each had two kills and Roni Long added two aces, six kills and served for three points for PHS (9-0). Also contributing to the win for Porterville were Beverly Atherton, Marilyn Quintero, Allicia Dabney, Stormy Baxley and Ali Watson.

PORTERVILLE 7, MISSION OAK 2
In singles for PHS (10-1 in the EYL), Quin Johnson won 6-2, 6-2, Jessica Gonzalez won 6-4, 6-1, Daryin Rodriguez won 6-3, 6-1, Savannah Marquez lost 6-3, 5-7, (4-10), Kathy Camin won 6-1, 6-1 and Cecilia Felix won 6-1, 6-2. In doubles for Porterville, Johnson and Rodriguez won 8-3 and Gonzalez and Felix won 8-5.
MONACHE 9, CESAR CHAVEZ 0
Electa Wright won again 6-0, 6-0 as she has now just lost four games in going 11-0 in the EYL in singles. Also for Monache in singles, Dahlia Martinez won 6-0, 6-0, Morgan Cohen won 6-0, 6-2, Noreen Baloch won 6-0, 6-3, Fareen Baloch won 6-2, 6-0 and Sonia Nunez won 6-3, 6-1. In doubles, Cohen and Rachelle Gutierrez won 8-3, Martinez and Nastassjia Pizanis won 8-1 and Sabrina Lathrop and Noreen Baloch won 8-0 for Monache (11-0 in the EYL).
TULARE UNION 4, GRANITE HILLS 3, susp.
The Grizzlies’ match with Union at Granite was suspended due to darkness. The match will be finished only if it has an effect on where the teams will finish in the EYL standings. The two matches that would need to be finished would be in doubles in which Crystal Ruiz and Sophia Martinez were losing 2-5 and Kathleen Jurkovich and Ernestina Quintero were entering a tiebreaker tied 8-8.
In singles for Granite, Lisa Yang lost 2-6, 4-6, Kelsey Blackburn lost 4-6, 6-7 (6-8), Ruiz won 6-2, 6-1, Brandy Ibarra lost 2-6, 6-7 (2-7), Andrea Carranza lost 4-6, 2-6 and Sophia Martinez won 7-5, 6-4. Blackburn and Yang won 8-1 in doubles for Granite (9-6, 7-3).
LINDSAY DROPS TWO
Lindsay fell to Orosi 7-2 and McFarland 5-4.
Against Orosi, Joanna Castro won 6-2, 6-1 in singles and Castro and Crystal Lemus won 8-1 in doubles. Against McFarland, frehman Brittany Brumley won 8-7 (7-3) for her first varsity win. Also in singles, Castro won 8-2 and Jannely Rangel won 8-2 for LHS.
In doubles, Rangel and Michel Whitehair won 8-4. The difference of the match came when Sarana McDaniels and Maira Martinez lost a close 6-8 decision.

LINDSAY 322, DELANO 355
Isabel Murguia shot a 63, Marissa Knutson and Jackie Rueda each fired a 64, Renee Alvarado had a 65 and Jessica Hernandez added a 66 for Lindsay on Tuesday as the Cardinals stayed unbeaten in league.
