Pascoe to re-sign with Giants

Bear Pascoe will be a New York Giant for the 2013 season.

Pascoe’s father, Sean Pascoe, said his son, a 2004 Granite Hills graduate, will re-sign sometime next week to play football with the Giants for the 2013 season. Sean said he didn’t know much about the contract, but did say the contract will be for one year for the 2013 season.

Sean also said the contract will likely be for a league minimum salary. The minimum salary for a player with Pascoe’s experience is somewhere in the neighborhood of $600,000. “I don’t think he’ll be getting what they were hoping,” Sean said. “At least he’s got a job, that’s the main thing.”

Pascoe is a restricted free agent, which means the Giants can still match any offer another team would make. It would be difficult for a player like Pascoe ­­— who’s essentially a part-time player as a tight end and fullback — to test the market as a free agent. Pascoe also had just four receptions for 35 yards with one touchdown last season.

But Pascoe is a valuable player for the Giants and it was a high priority for the team to bring back Pascoe. Pascoe is a versatile player who can play tight end, fullback or the H-back position, which is basically a blocking slot back, and Pascoe’s blocking is considered to be a key to the Giants offense.

Another reason why the Giants wanted Pascoe back was the example he sets with his work ethic.

Pascoe has been on the Giants regular season roster since early in the 2010 season. After the 2013 season, Pascoe will become an unrestricted free agent.

“He’ll be able to test it real good,” said Sean about his son entering the market as an unrestricted free agent after the 2013 season.
