Local roundup: PC volleyball takes second

The Porterville College volleyball team had an impressive showing in the Modesto Tournament on Friday, advancing to the championship match.

PC (3-1) opened with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-17 win over Modesto and then beat Solano 25-18, 18-25, 21-25, 25-19, 15-12 in the semifinals. In the finals, PC lost to L.A. Pierce 19-25, 14-25, 26-28.

“It was a really exciting match,” said PC coach Dale Henderson about the match against L.A. Pierce.

Making Porterville’s effort more impressive was the fact that it played the entire tournament without Allison Clem, who had an injured leg which affected her jumping ability, so Henderson decided to hold her out.

Against Modesto, Amanda Monge had 13 kills, four blocks, 10 digs and was 13-of-14 serving with four aces, Tori Davis had eight kills, two blocks and two digs and Stephanie Dounseroux had three kills, eight digs and 22 assists.

Against Solano, Monge sustained a knee injury in game two, but was able to return in game three. She had 19 kills, five blocks and 19 digs. Davis also had an outstanding match with 18 kills, seven and seven digs. In addition for PC, Kacey Markarian had seven kills and eight digs, Daniel Carrillo had five kills and 12 digs, Jennifer Landers had three kills, one block and 21 digs and Stephanie Dounseroux had six kills, 21 digs and 46 assists.

Against L.A. Pierce, Monge had four kills, two blocks and three digs, Davis had six kills and one block and Dounseroux had seven kills, two blocks and 11 assists.

“I was very pleased,” Henderson said. “They’re improving.”

Jessica Hernandez shot a solid 56 for Lindsay during its golf match against Porterville on Thursday at River Island. Also for LHS, Renee Alvarado fired a 65, Jackie Rueda shot a 62, Marissa Knutson had a 66, Destiny Garcia had a 72 and Isabel Murguia added a 75.
