Grizzlies, Panthers grab EYL wins
Porterville's and Granite Hills' girls tennis teams collected 15-3 victories, Monday night, improving their impressive EYL records.
Granite (13-6-2, 6-2-2 EYL) downed Delano 15-3 behind a 6-0 singles romp in rounds one and two.
As is the story whenever the Tigers come to town: Regina Mecenario and Jenny Maun won both their doubles matches and one of their singles encounters, but the rest of the Tigers were shut out.
Sarah Herrera won her two singles sets 6-2, 6-0 with Caitlin Jetter winning 6-1, 6-1. No. 3 player Kelsey Blackburn grabbed 6-1, 6-0 victories as well.
Mecenario and Maun beat the Jennifer Castrita-Maira Zavala tandem 6-1 and the Bailey Ward-Mai Lor pairing 6-3. Castrita-Zavala won their other match 6-0 with Ward-Lor cruising to a 6-1 victory.
Lisa Yang and Sheng Lor won their round-one match 6-1 then emerged victorious in the night's most exciting match, winning 7-6 (12-10) in a tiebreaker.
Herrera and Jetter won their third-round doubles match 6-3 with Castrita and Zavala winning 6-2. Blackburn and Yang garnered a 6-0 victory.
Mai Lor lost 6-2 in singles while ward and Sheng Lor got the Grizzlies' final two wins, 6-4, 6-0, respectively.
Porterville 15, Tulare Union 3
The Panthers topped the Redskins with ease to improve to 9-0 in the EYL.
No. 1 singles player Shiloah Gibson won 7-5 in her first match (she was behind 5-2), but lost 6-2 in round two to top Redskin Jenna Niggli.
Alisia Scudder lost 7-6 to Niggli after having her down 5-2 in round one and won 6-1 in round two. Nettie Roman split her two matches as well (6-2, 2-6).
In doubles, Porterville reigned with Nicole Ervin-Larissa Clem winning 6-2, 6-4, the still-unbeaten team of Alecia Gonzales-Nancy Valdez won 6-3, 6-1 and Brena Simpson-Quin Johnson won 6-1, 6-0, and 6-1 in round three.
Ervin, Clem and Gonzales swept round-three singles with Gibson and Scudder winning 6-0 and Valdez-Wendy Suarez getting a 7-5 win.
