Grizzlies softball stayed undefeated, but not without a 10-8 scare from Woodlake, Tuesday afternoon.
Granite pitcher Kaitlin Fife breezed through the first three innings to help the Grizzlies build a 4-0 lead. But coach Terry Williams inserted freshman Ashlee Halopoff and stuck by her the rest of the way despite the Tigers’ near comeback.
Woodlake pulled ahead temporarily at 7-6, but Halopoff personally brought the Grizzlies back with a two-run triple and Marykate Herrera’s sacrifice bunt capped a string of four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Herrera finished 2-of-4 from the plate, as did Marissa Martinez, Jennifer Landers and Deanna Alamillo.
“I always tell them, ‘Don’t say die ‘til the blue say game,’” Williams said. “Our girls are learning to never give up.”
Granite (5-0) visits Dinuba today before wrapping up the Strathmore Tournament on Saturday.
