Granite Hills' Brumfield speeds to 1st in 800m at EYL meet
After all the head-to-head frustrations against older siblings Monache and Porterville, Granite Hills track and field made some of the loudest noises at Wednesday’s East Yosemite League track and field meet.
It didn’t hurt that the Grizzlies had home-field advantage at Jacob Rankin Stadium, either.
Of all three schools, Granite’s Tommy Brumfield was one of two to place first in any of the events. Brumfield cruised by the rest of the league’s finest in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:04.99. He also placed third in the 400-meter contest at 51.93 seconds.
Brumfield’s contributions helped earn the Grizzlies’ boys team 27 points — fifth overall.
The Panthers’ depth, however, gave them a slight edge — three points, in fact — as they took third overall with 30 points. Monache boys gathered just eight points as they finished seventh.
The Tulare schools dominated all EYL teams, with Tulare Western boys, led by Fresno State football-bound Marquess Wilson, and Mustang girls each clinching first. Both of Tulare Union’s squads followed suit in second.
Monache’s girls had the most success of Porterville schools with a total of 51 points for third place while Porterville’s girls (11 points) finished sixth.
Monache’s Madison Lawley was the other local to garner a first-place medal in the discus throw with a distance of 107 feet, 1 inch. She also took third in the shot put (31-feet-8).
