Granite Hills 8, Woodlake 1

Granite Hills boys’ tennis has started continued its hot start with a rout over Woodlake, Wednesday.

The Grizzlies’ top three singles players returned from last year, but coach Randy Smee hopes to improve on the 1-11 EYL showing. After sweeping Mission Oak and Lindsay, 9-0, the Grizzlies are setting the tone early.

No. 1 singles Johnny Yang stayed undefeated with an 8-4 victory over his Woodlake counterpart. No. 2 David Tiernan won 8-5, as did No. 4 Ker Thao (8-3), No. 5 James Capps (8-1) and No. 6 Matt Ramirez (8-3).

No. 3 Robert Madrigal had the lone blip with a 4-8 loss, but he teamed up with Tiernan to win his doubles match, 8-3. Yang and Thao (8-4) and Winston Ramirez and Milton Thao (8-1) won theirs as well.

Granite (3-0) will compete in this weekend’s Clovis Tournament — the nation’s largest high school tennis tourney with 120 teams.
