Local roundup: PC volleyball back in first place

 

The Porterville College volleyball team finds itself back in first place in the Central Valley Conference as Reedley ended Fresno City’s 57-match win streak on Wednesday.
Paired with PC’s 25-13, 25-9, 25-16 win at Columbia with Reedley’s win over Fresno in five games, Porterville and Fresno are now both 7-1 in the CVC. 
Against Columbia, libero Jennifer Landers had an outstanding match for PC (11-6) with 25 digs and she was 12-of-13 serving with one ace. Also for Porterville, Amanda Monge had 17 kills, two blocks six digs and was 6-of-6 serving, Tori Davis had six kills, five digs and was 18-of-19 serving with two aces, Allison Clem had eight kills and two digs and Stephanie Dounseroux had two kills, nine digs, 32 assists and was 9-of-11 serving with one ace.
TULARE WESTERN 3, PORTERVILLE 2
For the second time, Porterville took the East Yosemite League’s No. 2 team to the limit before losing in five games 25-17, 18-25, 12-25, 25-16, 10-15 at Sharman Gym. Becky Mueller, Nicole Erickson, Savannah Ertl and Nicole Erickson all had outstanding matches for PHS (7-5 in the East Yosemite League).
Mueller had 16 kills and five blocks, Ertl had 31 assists and five kills, Erickson had 12 kills and six blocks, Rochelle Lupio had two blocks and played well defensively, Michaela Zimmerman had three kills and three blocks, Hannah Emerson had three aces and played well defensively and Jenna Duran played well defensively for PHS.
GRANITE 3, KENNEDY 2
Granite Hills beat Robert F. Kennedy 24-26, 25-19, 14-25, 25-22, 15-13. Corina Felix had her best match of the year with 21 digs and 10 kills and Wendy Camargo also had 23 digs for Granite. 
Also for Granite, Lupita Flores had five kills and 17 digs, Vanessa Felix had five kills and six digs, Debra Rodriguez had four kills and 19 assists, Hannah Vehrs had 15 digs and Jody Georgianna added two kills and 11 digs.
PHS JVS 2, WESTERN 0
Porterville (11-1 in the EYL) won the junior varsity match 25-14, 25-20. Roni Long had 14 kills and one block, Cecilia Ledesma had 20 assists, two kills and one ace, Kayla Irwin had two aces, two kills and seven assists, Taylor Mueller had two aces and three kills, Madison Avila had three kills, Kenzy Flynn had two kills and Beverly Atherton had a kill on match point to put the match away.
WATER POLO
PHS GIRLS 25, WESTERN 6
Matlyn Morris had five goals and three assists, Milynn Scheer had one goal and three assists, Sydney Knight had three goals, Brooke Day, Makayla Reed, Haley Newkirk and Marnie Kavern each scored twice, Marlee Duncan had two steals, Abby Peltzer had two goals and three assists, Mady Snyder, Kaina Kennel, Mikayla Scheer and Kassidy Lane, Courtney Hall and MaryRose McGinn all acored once, Marlee Duncan had two steals and Aftin Whitten added an assist.
CROSS COUNTRY
MONACHE ROLLS
All of Monache’s teams rolled to a sweep against Mission Oak and Robert F. Kennedy in Tulare. Monache’s varsity boys improved to 6-0 in the EYl by beating Mission Oak 26-36 and Kennedy 15-49, Monache’s varsity girls (3-3 in the EYL) beat Mission Oak 23-36 and Kennedy 22-39, Monache’s frosh-soph girls (6-0 in the EYL) beat Kennedy 17-44 and Mission Oak and Monache’s frosh-soph boys (5-1 in the EYL) beat Kennedy 15-45 and Mission Oak.
In the varsity boys race, Jorge Ceballos and Jesus Salas battled for first overall as Ceballos won, finishing the three-mile course in an outstanding time of 15 minutes, 46 seconds while Salas was second in 15:47. In the varsity girls race, Mission Oak’s JoJo Zorn and Monache’s Kacie Williams took a wrong turn and had to run a lot farther. Zorn still won in 20:41 while Williams was fourth in 21:48. Monache’s Monique Orozco was third in 21:09.
In the frosh-soph boys race, Monache’s Israel Sotelo and Kyler Tabor finished in a dead head with Sotelo first in 12:34 (two miles) and Tabor second also in 12:34. In the frosh-soph girls race, Monache’s Aracely Rodriguez led a 1-6 finish, winning in 14:02.
GRANITE
Granite Hills varsity boys lost 15-34 to Western and 16-41 to Delano while Granite’s girls lost 17-46 to Western and 19-38 to Granite. Angelica Reyes led Granite’s girls, finishing in 22:13. For Granite’s boys, Oscar Campos finished in 18:08, Jose Gonzalez finished in 18:11 and Zack Paulson finished in 18:18.
GIRLS TENNIS
SIERRA PACIFIC 6, LINDSAY 3
In singles on Tuesday for Lindsay, Jannely Rangel won 8-5 and Michelle Whitehair won 8-3. In doubles, Joanna Castro and Crystal Lemus won 8-7 (7-4) for Lindsay.
GIRLS GOLF
Lindsay finished fifth at the Area Championships held on Tuesday at Tulare Golf Course.
