Saleh, Carganilla earn All-EYL honors

THE PORTERVILLE RECORDER

The Tulare schools dominated the standings in the EYL this season.

So it should come as no surprise that the Redskins and Mustangs landed four of the six first-team players on this year’s all-league squads.

Junior forward Marquiss Wilson was named league MVP, leading the Redskins to an 11-1 mark behind 18 points per game. Redskin 3-point specialist Jordan Searby, who scored 25 on Porterville in their first meeting, made the top squad as well.

The Mustangs, who went 5-1 against the Porterville city squads, landed Frankie Coelho and Vince Hooks on the top team.

Coelho scored in double digits in all four games against Porterville and Monache, while Hooks scored a season-high 25 against the Panthers in a 72-66 shootout, Jan. 30.

Monache senior point guard Omar Saleh was the only member of the city trio to earn first-team honors.

The quickest Marauder led the team with 13.4 points per game and 2.5 steals per contest. Saleh’s season high came Dec. 5 against Immanuel, scoring 25 points. He scored 10 in Monache’s 59-58 overtime upset over No. 6 seed San Joaquin Memorial in the first round of the Division II playoffs.

Saleh’s teammate, Jordan Howard, was the second team’s center. Howard nearly averaged a double-double with 12 points and 9.2 rebounds a game.

His masterpiece came in the SJM playoff game when he scored 23 points after having his suspension lifted hours earlier.

Porterville senior point guard Phillip Carganilla was the only Panther to make the top two squads. Carganilla scored 14 fourth-quarter points in the Panthers’ near-upset over the league-champion Redskins, Jan. 16 and helped lead his team to two victories in three games over Monache.

Porterville senior center Eddie Mendez, junior forward Jordan McIntire, Monache junior forward Tyler Hines, Granite Hills senior guard Curtis Keene and senior forward Nate Cordova received honorable mention honors.
