Edison ends Marauders' season

THE PORTERVILLE RECORDER

Monache softball coach Dave Koontz had seen this before, all too many times.

His No. 12 girls fell, 3-1, to No. 5 Edison in the Division II playoffs, Wednesday night.

Edison had five hits, Monache totaled four. Edison gets the big hits. Monache didn’t.

“It’s a prototypical game for our season,” Koontz said. “Story of the year.”

The Marauders opened their bid for an upset in the first inning when Chandra Jones’ bunt allowed Danielle Emerson to score and take a 1-0 lead.

But Edison responded by tying Monache in the third and scoring two more runs in the fourth off three hits.

Marauders’ freshman pitcher Raeleen Torres threw for four innings and allowed four hits while Emerson, also a freshman, shut the opposition down the rest of the way.

Monache’s pitching staff had to make do without star senior Kaitlyne Thompson, who left early in the season. Also missing for Wednesday’s game was starting third baseman Victoria Jackson, who was ill.

“I’ve been real proud of my pitching all year,” Koontz said. “We just didn’t get the offense we needed. My kinds shouldn’t hang their heads. They worked hard. It was just that kinda year.”

Koontz estimated his squad lost 10 games by a total of 14 runs. Monache finished the season at 9-16 overall.
