Pirates ‘Ram'd' by Fresno City in season finale

THE PORTERVILLE RECORDER

Fresno City College 107, Porterville College 60

Porterville College guard Alex Shew finished off her freshman season by pouring in a new career-high of 35 points.

Unfortunately for the Pirates, the rest of the squad barely hit a third of their shots on their way to a 47-point shellacking at the hands of Central Valley Conference-leading Fresno City College.

Sophomore guard Kalyn Reed was the only other Pirate to hit more than one shot, finishing with a total of eight points behind two treys.

Shew finished 14-of-22, including 3-of-6 from downtown.

Kee’Maya Snowden pulled down seven boards.

“They’re just not making they’re shots,” PC coach Dave Kavern said.

The Pirates were beat both inside and out as the Rams shot better than 50 percent (18-of-35) from beyond the arc while outrebounding Porterville 58-34.

Kavern decided to pack the defense closer to the paint and take their chances against the Rams’ outside shooting.

“If they were going to abuse us, they’ll abuse us from outside,” he said. “And they did.”

Sumiya Darden scored 19 points for Fresno while Kayla Clement added 18 and Lacey Gibbons and Blakely Goldberg each finished with 17.

The Rams (22-6, 9-0 CVC) long had the conference wrapped up while Porterville (4-19, 2-7 CVC) looks to rebuild next season after sophomores Reed, Crystal Bueno, Quaraya Fuston and Lisa Lopez graduate.
